When Sati ಸತಿ (other form of goddess Parvathi ) married Lord Shiva ಈಶ್ವರ, Sati’s father Daksha ದಕ್ಷ, who considered Shiva as his enemy, as he was a Smashaana vaasi ಸ್ಮಶಾನ ವಾಸಿ(one who resides in crematorium) and disliked him.. With great anger, Daksha abandoned his daughter coming his home..
Few days later, Daksha performed a big yaagaa and homa with all Gods and Goddessess invited for the same , except Lord Shiva.. Sati went to question her father , for not inviting her husband, for which Daksha humiliated her and Lord Shiva.. Unable to bear the humiliation she fell into the divine Yagna kunda ಯಜ್ಞ ಕುಂಡ ( sanctorum where pooja is performed in Hindu religion by invoking Gods), due to this the entire pooja sanctum sanctorum turned into blood shed ..
Hearing this Lord Shiva, with great anger , took form of Veerabhadra and Mahaakaali.. Veerabhadra and Mahaakaali went and killed Daksha.. Later Lord Shiva in his original form broke down , holding his wife’s burnt body… Lord Brahma and Lord Vishnu approached him and blessed Sati’s body to become various shakti peetas ಶಕ್ತಿ ಪೀಠಗಳು…
