Slow down mummy and my thoughts

I usually will not get much time to read personal emails regularly…. But once I received a mail (forwarded mail) from one of my close colleagues and took a pause from regular work and started reading it carefully..

The mail body contained a poem penned by the writer Rebecca Knight and from the very first line the whole poem is heart-touching for all the parents and specially if you are a working mother… Below is the poem as received ( it is really not just a poem it has loads of emotions/feelings embedded in it ) as felt by kids who are left with nannies/domestic help/day-care/relatives…

Slow down mummy, there is no need to rush,
Slow down mummy, what is all the fuss?
Slow down mummy, make yourself a cup of tea.
Slow down mummy, come spend some time with me.

Slow down mummy, let’s pull boots on for a walk,
Let’s kick at piles of leaves, and smile and laugh and talk.
Slow down mummy, you look ever so tired,
Come sit and snuggle under the duvet, and rest with me a while.

Slow down mummy, those dirty dishes can wait,
Slow down mummy, let’s have some fun – bake a cake!
Slow down mummy, I know you work a lot,
but sometimes mummy, it’s nice when you just stop.

Sit with us a minute,
and listen to our day,
spend a cherished moment,
because our childhood won’t stay!

~ Rebecca Knight

Being a working mother, I definitely feel and understand every line mentioned above… We (Many women including me) would really love/want to work post/after pregnancy for any of the below reasons as per my observation:-

  • Financial constraints ( Loan payments /commitments)
  • To support husband and family, parents in today’s expensive world
  • To persuade one’s career and have their own path/follow their passions/ ambitions/aspirations/dreams
  • And many more valid reasons..

And as according to me there is no correct path/way/direction that we can conclude saying ‘This is right or this is wrong or this is valid/correct’… Every decision is based on situations and experiences.. Also the kid’s psychological development is also very important which cannot be brought back later…

But I personally feel if mother goes off to work for any critical reasons, the very next person who can take care of the kid could be grand-parents( who are best, reliable, dependable and best option).. Next option would be day-care ( since it is almost just like schools and there would be numerous children and security).. I really do not suggest nannies/domestic help until supervision by a well known person………….  But last but not the least, the better option would be to take a break for some span of time and personally taking care of kid and pursuing with work post-that…

I think this is still debatable … do let me know your feedback/opinions on the same? 🙂
