Lord Ganesha is worshipped in various forms.
We all have seen various images and pictures of Lord Ganesha.Whenever we see Ganesha image in standing posture, immediately what comes to our mind is it must be ‘Idagunji Ganesha'(ಇಡಗುಂಜಿ ಗಣೇಶ). This is a standing posture of Lord Ganesha with Modaka and Kamala [ Lotus flower ] in 2 arms, made out of black stone. It is around 14-15 kms from Murudeshwara. We followed the route from Murudeshwara to Idagunji.
The Devaalaya Garbha-Gudi ( Sanctum sanctorum ) , has it’s own strong vibration and one can experience the same. Seva includes the Abhisheka, Archana and prasadams are given.
History behind the place:
Long time back before Kaliyuga, in Dwapara Yuga, there lived a saint called ‘ Vaalakilya’. He wanted to perform Tapassu/Tapa/Deep meditation for the welfare of people and was searching for a suitable place.. He found a place called ‘ KunjaaraNya (ಕುಂಜಾರಣ್ಯ )‘ or ‘ Kunjavana ‘.[ Vana or AraNya means Forest in kannada ].Other ancient names of this place are ‘ Idaakunjavana ‘ / ‘ Gunjavana ‘ which might have given the current name of the place as ‘Idagunji’.
But there were lots of disturbance in that place and he, along with other saints, found it was very difficult for their meditation. Hence he prayed Lord Krishna for His blessings, meanwhile Sage Naarada [ who is termed as mediator between Gods and saints] came and suggested to pray to Lord Ganesha who is Vighna Hara and hence installed the Lord Ganesha idol here, and suggested the saints to do all the needed pooja procedures, so that Lord Ganesh will grant him the boon and will remove all the obstacles associated with the place..
Sage Naarada also gave him an instance where in the same place even Lord Vishnu, Lord Shiva all had prayed Lord Ganesha to remove obstacles and fight against evil. He also showed him a suitable place near to river Sharavathi.
Listening to all these saint Vaalakilya performed pooja with great faith and devotion to Lord Ganesh which pleased the Lord and he is said to be in the place and granting boons(ಸರ್ವಸಿದ್ಧಿ ಪ್ರದಾಯಕಾಯ) to thousands of devotees who visit the temple every year.. That place is currently known as ‘Idagunji Ganesha’.
